Spotify Launches in India with Premium Subscription Starting at Rs. 199

Spotify is finally available in India and the company is hoping to tap into the emerging market. It faces stiff competition from existing platforms in India such as Apple music, Google Play, Gaana and Saavn.

Speaking about the launch, Spotify’s managing director in India, Amarjit Singh Batra said “Indians love music. It’s an inherent part of our lifestyle and culture, whether we pray, work, or relax. The mobile internet revolution has led to a rapid rise in the number of connected Indians, making music streaming the preferred way to enjoy music here.”

Spotify which has also recently been launched in the Middle East is branching out beyond music and will be proving Indians streaming access to multilingual playlists, music from popular Bollywood movies among many others.

According to a recent research by Counterpoint, the music streaming market is estimated to have around 150 million users currently. The figures could as high as 400 million in the next three to four years, it makes a lot of sense for the Swedish firm to launch its services in India.

Monthly premium subscription goes for Rs. 199, that’s $1.68 or £1.27. Playlists on the app will be curated by Indian music experts. For “city playlists” such as Bangalore, Mumbai and Delhi, algorithms will be used to spot trends in the country.

Spotify is available in 79 markets and currently has 207 million active users. It recently announced a record 96 million paid users and plans to make the platform as big as Netflix.
