MacBook Pro Flexgate issues Quietly Fixed by Apple Without Admitting it, Ifixit Claims

From the 2016 models onwards, there have been reports of MacBook Pro flexgate issues affecting thousands of users. After using the laptops for newly 2 years and opening and closing them for a that long, a “whitening light” appears through the bottom bezel of the panel which is different from the normal display.

Apple has refused to acknowledge or admit this problem but a forum member of MacRumours Olivia88 discovered her 13” 2018 MacBook Pro comes with a longer cable than the previous models. Since the older models had shorter cable for their flex, they were too short to withstand the wear and tear that comes with the prolonged usage and opening and closing of the laptops.

Ifixit verified this by checking and measuring the 15” 2018 MacBook Pro flex cable against the 2016 models and found the claim to be true, the 2018 models had a 2mm longer cable. Teardown engineer from ifixit, Taylor Dixon said,

This is significant because it gives the backlight cable more room to wrap around the board and not come into contact with the board as the laptop is opened past 90 degrees.”

This may not be a permanent fix and could just be one to delay the inevitable failure since it was extended by 2mm in the 2018 models, explaining this, Dixon further stated,

The longer cable definitely gives more room to breathe around the board, but it’s still in such close contact with the board that it’s impossible to tell whether it’s rubbing on the board at any point.”

It is baffling how Apple has not made any comment as to this. For affected laptops to be fixed, users will have to part with $700 for the entire screen to be replaced since the display cable is integrated into the screen.
