Samsung Launches its First Foldable Phone, the Galaxy Fold

Samsung Launches its First Foldable Phone, the Galaxy Fold
In November 2018, Samsung teased a foldable phone. Fast forward to yesterday’s Galaxy “Unpacked” press conference, the device was revealed as the Samsung Galaxy Fold.  The company plans to launch this phone for US consumers on April 26 at $1980 through T-Mobile and AT &T and T-Mobile. Every purchase includes a free pair of Samsung’s wireless earbuds. The Galaxy Fold will come in both an LTE and 5G variants. Furthermore, Samsung plans to introduce the product to the European markets on May 3rd. It will cost € 2,000 at this location.

The Galaxy Fold will feature the latest 7.3-inch Infinity Flex Display which enables the device morph to a tablet-sized screen that’s foldable into a pocket. The primary screen is QXGA+ resolution (4.2:3) which becomes a 4.6 in n HD+ (screen) which is used during the phone mode.

The smartphone comes with 512GB Universal Storage 3.0 which enables quicker connectivity. It also works with a Qualcomm 7nm octa-core SoC and 12GB worth of RAM. Surprisingly, the Galaxy Fold uses two batteries which offer a total capacity of 4,380mAh. The fold separates these cells.

The device also has strong support that consists of a hinge system made of many interlocking gears. These gears are hidden at the back of the smartphone and help the Galaxy Fold morph from phone to tablet mode. Also, this device has a triple rear camera assembly which consists of a 16MP ultra-wide sensor with 12MP wide angle and telephoto lens. Furthermore, the smartphone comes with a 10MP selfie snapper. The Galaxy Fold will come in 4 colour variants with the main tablet display as the focus.

The Galaxy Fold can run three apps at the same time, and it also uses an app continuity system which adjusts these apps when users switch between tablet and phone modes. Apps such as YouTube, WhatsApp and Microsoft Office have been configured to adapt to the new screen and modes. Furthermore, Samsung has partnered with Google to enable Android 9 Pie support the Fold’s display.

The smartphone company demonstrated some apps in this mode. It also showed participants the switch from phone to tablet. The blog pointed out that the software operated smoothly; however, it looked better in the tablet mode than as a phone. Samsung designed this smartphone for use with one hand; yet, it has large bezels which is invisible when switched to a tablet.

Although Samsung is the first mainstream brand to feature a foldable phone, other brands are coming up with the same concept. For instance, Xiaomi, Huawei and Lenovo have set plans to launch foldable devices while LG has been focusing on creating flexible OLED screens and TVs that roll in a box. With these developments, we should expect a large number of foldable devices in 2019.
